First Step Devotions
Finding Your Way into the Bible

The discipline of reading Scripture and journaling what is revealed has great potential for changing our lives as Christians.  The reading and journaling only takes about 30 minutes each day, but the power lasts way beyond that small time commitment.  This activity is the primary discipleship tool used here at Lord of Life and already is an integral part of the development of our leaders. As you start, you may need some guidance - we do trainings on Sunday mornings throughout the year or call the office for individual help.

A simple prayer (“Holy Spirit, come and teach me today.” Or “Here I am Lord, ready to listen.  Fill me with your wisdom.”) centers us as we begin.  The First Steps reading plan gives us Scripture readings that take about 10 minutes to read, and along the way, we underline a verse or two we feel the Spirit is raising up to us to consider. After copying this verse into our journal, we listen to the coaching of God’s Spirit and write the thoughts the Spirit brings.  As we end in a simple prayer of thanksgiving, we can carry these thoughts with us during our day.  It’s no wonder our life begins to change!

God waits ready to meet with us each day – to teach, inspire, refresh, comfort, and renew us.  God has wisdom for our lives and those of us who have entered into this discipline to know God better have found that He stands ready to reveal Himself and His will as we listen and take notes.  Whether you are adding a new tool to your disciple’s toolkit, or are seeking a way to deepen your faith by renewing an old discipline, this willingness to read and journal will lead you further down the road of your spiritual journey.
